Tips to Crank Up Your Web Marketing

By: Spencer Pirres

Marketing in the real world and on the web are two completely different things. Following is advice you can use to tweak your internet marketing campaigns.

1. Update Your Site often - Not only does this encourage people to return to your site, but search engine spiders as well. Frequently updated sites also tend to have better search engine rankings than those that sit static with few updates.

2. Widgets Are Us – When considering whether to start a site, make sure you rely on objective research. What you think might sell is irrelevant. Use research tools such as Overture or Wordtracker to make sure people are actually searching for your idea.

3. SEO Dead Words – When pursuing a search engine optimization campaign, it is important to focus on relevant keywords. That being said, keep in mind there are words that do not count. These words are fillers such as “the”, “a” and so on.

4. First Internet Marketing Step - When it comes to internet marketing, the first step you should take is clear. Research! Figure out what keywords your prospects are using and incorporate them in your site.

5. PPC vs SEO - The debate between PPC and SEO is a non-starter. If you don't have rankings, market with PPC. If you do, turn off all PPC ads for keywords under which you rank in the top 10.

6. Paying Search Engines for Traffic – Search engines sell traffic through something known as pay-per-click marketing. For most new sites, it is a good way to get immediate traffic. Just make sure you are making more money than you are spending.

7. Contextual PPC Advertising - Contextual PPC advertising allows you to put ads on other people's site. In general, you should not. The quality of the traffic clicking on your ads can be very low, to wit, you don't pick up much business.

8. The Holy Grail of Type in Traffic – Regardless of the type of site you have, your ultimate goal is to get type in traffic. This occurs when a person types in your domain name instead of using a search engine. Amazon.com gets lots of type in traffic.

9. Optimal Conversion Rates – Traffic to your site is nice, but you need to convert it into sales. Your conversion rate is the number of sales you have per visitor. Anything over 1 in 400 is a bad sign.

10. MSN vs Google Search Engines - When marketing, you need to know which search engines to focus on. Google has the advantage of controlling the most traffic, but rankings come slowly. MSN will rank sites quickly, but has little traffic.

Advice is one of those dime a dozen things. Everyone has it to give and they often won’t shut up about it. I am probably no different, but I can say the above has helped me make money on the net.
